What Is Organic

imageOrganic food is produced according to set standards and procedures in the most natural way. This would translate that organic products are grown with minimal impact to the environment, with no use of pesticides, fertilizers, human waste or sludge. Traditionally, organic farms have been small family run farms – highly unorganized and fragmented. The scenario slowly changed with organic food growing in wide popularity in the 1990’s. This niche market is now showing a tremendous growth and is expected to show annual growth rates of at least 10-15%, depending on the country. The appetite of consumers from developed countries is changing, with a growing interest now being shown in exotic flavors and a general drift towards healthier and safer food products.

Health conscious consumers were lured to organic food as it was 100% chemical-free, fresh and minimally processed. Now with awareness being spread among more customers the demand has gone up, with high volume sales now made possible through supermarket outlets. Moreover the method is eco-friendly, sustainable and offers minimal environmental impact. In the long-term perspective, organically grown food is the best bet ever – best deal for the environment, us and for our future generations to come.
